JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Centre women's golf finished second overall at the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate, played at the Indian Mound course of the Jekyll Island Golf Club.
Centre shot 323 as a team, tied for the second-lowest Sunday score as the field battled rainy and windy conditions. Overall, the Colonels finished behind only No. 2 Methodist, coming out ahead of six other nationally-ranked programs in the 16-team event.
Sophomore
Rylee Suttor finished third among 82 golfers, with her 76 in round three matching two others as the lowest individual score Sunday. She carded no worse than bogey despite the elements, and took two birdies. Her 3-under 69 on Saturday proved to be the lowest score from any player in any round, as well.
Fellow sophomore
Abby Ligons recorded her own top-10 finish, coming in a tie for ninth after Sunday's 79. Like Suttor, she did no worse than bogey on any hole and added two birdies.
Margaret Butts finished T-15th following an 81 that featured two birdies.
Ainsley Carter (T-31st) and
Bailey Plourde (T-34th) rounded out Centre's lineup with an 87 and 90, respectively.
Centre led the field in par 3 scoring (3.25) and total number of pars (108). Suttor led all players with seven birdies.
SATURDAY RECAP
As a team, the Colonels shot 302 to rise from ninth place to second after 36 holes, despite continued windy conditions.
Rylee Suttor matched the program's single-round record - held by herself and teammate
Bailey Plourde - carding a 69 that featured four birdies. She sits in third overall among 82 individuals.
Rookies
Margaret Butts (77) and
Ainsley Carter (78) both improved by several strokes from Friday's first round. Each recorded a birdie during Saturday's second round.
Plourde also saw a four-stroke difference in round two, firing a 79.
Abby Ligons shot an 82 Saturday and is in a tie for 14th overall.
The Colonels continue with the third and final round Saturday.
FRIDAY RECAP
Amid a stacked field that features eight top-25 programs, the Colonels sit in ninth after 18 holes. Centre shot 325 overall while battling windy conditions for much of the day, and is part of a crowded bunch of six teams separated by seven strokes.
Abby Ligons led the Colonels with a remarkably consistent 5-over 77. The sophomore carded five bogies and took par on the other 13 holes, sitting in a tie for sixth among the 82 individuals.
Her classmate,
Rylee Suttor, followed with a 9-over 81, totaling three birdies.
Senior
Bailey Plourde (83) and rookies
Margaret Butts (84) and
Ainsley Carter (86) rounded out Centre's lineup.
