ATLANTA – Centre men's tennis gutted out a narrow 5-4 victory at Oglethorpe Saturday, beginning the 2021 season with the first of two matches against the Stormy Petrels.
The Colonels swept all three doubles matches, then got a resilient comeback victory from rookie
Ashton Whitt in singles action that ultimately clinched the team victory.
HIGHLIGHTS
- At No. 1 doubles,
Arpit Rana and
Bo Bush ousted Oglethorpe's Walter Benson and Calvin Schneider, 8-4.
- Whitt and
Matthew Bulow paired at No. 2 doubles, defeating Ameya Dani and Vince Claussen by an 8-3 margin.
- No. 3 doubles proved to be the closest of the three bouts, but
Danny Nelson and
Faraz Ghamgosar topped Zoe Raymond and Daniel Cohen, 8-7, to give Centre a commanding 3-0 lead.
- Rana took care of business in the top singles slot, beginning his spring with a 7-6, 6-4 win against Benson.
- Oglethorpe claimed singles Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6, however, pulling the score level at 4-4.
- All eyes fell to court four, where Whitt and Schneider were trading punches. Schneider claimed set one, 6-1, and was up 5-2 in the second before Whitt rallied to win, 7-6, forcing a decisive third set where he clinched the Colonels' victory, 6-3.
UP NEXT
Centre and Oglethorpe play again tomorrow (Sunday) at 10 am. Saturday's match counts toward the Southern Athletic Association standings while Sunday's is played as a non-conference contest.
