Swim & Dive Ends Regular Season with Sweep over Asbury

1/29/2022 2:31:00 PM

WILMORE, Ky. - After sweeping Union on Friday night, the Centre swimming & diving teams traveled north to take on the Asbury Eagles for the final duel meet of the regular season on Saturday afternoon. The teams featured several bright spots in this meet, including a sweep of Asbury. The women took down the Eagles on a final score of 130-71, while the men maintained the program's perfect weekend with a 124-81 victory.

"The team really came together today; we've had four meets in the past seven days." praised Head Coach Dean Brownley, "They were mentally and physically exhausted, yet they still had the ability to swim fast and compete really well against a good Asbury team."

Both the men and the women featured individual student-athletes who had multiple first-place finishes in the meet, two on the women's side and one for the men. Elise Burch was one of the two women to claim multiple individual wins on Saturday, finishing on top in the women's 200 free (2:04.82) and the 100 free (:56.00). Burch's 100 time showed many bright spots outside the win, her final time being around a half second faster than the times she posted this time last season. Callie West found two more wins for her freshman campaign against the Eagles, finding victories in the women's 50 free (:25.08) and the 100 fly (:58.86). West's time in the fly was the only one in the event to complete the race in under a minute. The men's 100 back and 50 free were claimed by Kai Oddo, leading the men's side with multiple individual victories. Oddo's performances were a :55.15 in the backstroke and a :21.76 in the 50, the latter being a substantial one a half second drop from this time last year.

The Colonels were able to sweep all four relay races against the Eagles, even claiming the top three spots in the women's 200 free relay. Sophia Fogle, Allison Carr, Greer Manger and Burch combining for a 1:46.19 time to take the win in the event. The men took a solid two and a half second win over Asbury in the men's 400 medley relay as the program's first race of the afternoon, touching the wall at a 3:35.05 time by the team of Kai Oddo, Bryan Killian, Jackson Fears and Henry Lang.

With Saturday's contest being the final before the conference championships, the Colonels were able to find several bright spots on the student-athletes' performances just outside of wins. The women's side featured a pair of women who found around seven seconds of improvements compared to their races in January of last season, a note to build confidence on within the next couple weeks. Connor Foster was one of the two women to accomplish this feat, her 200 IM victory on Saturday (2:20.40) is 7.08 seconds faster than her 2:27.48 time against Franklin College last season. Maddie Hall was able to complete this feat as well, her 100 breast time dropping from 1:19.28 last year to a 1:12.00 time against Asbury. The men were able to see several major improvements as well, Lang doing so in multiple individual events on Saturday. Comparing to his performances against Franklin College in January last season, Lang was able to drop five seconds in the 200 free (1:48.57 on Saturday) and around a 12-second improvement in his 500 free (5:03.34).

The Colonels swimming & diving teams now will have their complete focus for the postseason, their next moment on the blocks being the 2022 Southern Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Conference Championships. That meet will take place in Birmingham, Ala. over a span of four days. Day one kicks off on Wednesday, Feb. 16 and will end on the night of Saturday, Feb. 19.
