BECKLEY, W. Va. – After they raced on Friday night, the Centre swimming & diving teams came back to the lanes on Saturday afternoon to take on West Virginia Tech. The women were able to seal the win on a dominant 262 - 89 victory, while the men fought back after being down early to emerge victorious on a 218.5 - 168.5 result.
Greer Manger highlighted the women's races with a perfect day, ending the meet with wins in all four of the races that she competed in. Manger earned a dominant performance in the women's 500 free, the junior posting a 5:34.93 final time that was ahead of the second-place finisher by about 16 and a half seconds. She also helped as the third leg off the women's 400 free relay to a 13-second win, teaming up with
Katelynn Stanczyk,
Caroline Lee and
Callie West for a 3:40.51 time.
Jackson Fears struck again for several victories on the men's side, his four event victories being a big push to the Gold and White's comeback efforts. Fears was able to sweep both butterfly individual races (100; :52.89, 200; 1:57.44) while also leading off the winning men's 400 free relay that capped the day.
Kai Oddo,
Henry Lang and
George Von Canon would join the Louisville, Ky., native on the relay, the team finishing on a 3:16.42 time that would edge West Virginia Tech by over three seconds.
The Colonels would have several other high-quality performances in the meet,
Emma Daman collected two individual victories during the meet's duration. The Kentucky native found a three-second victory in the women's 50 free, her :25.21-winning time coming before her three-second win in the 100 fly (1:01.02 time).
Ben Wafford came around as a multi-win student-athlete as well, dominating the men's 200 breast with a 2:18.94-winning time that resulted in a 10-second win. Wafford also swam as the breastroke leg of the men's 400 medley relay, the team of him,
Dustin Niebauer, Fears and Oddo escaping West Virginia Tech by about two and a half seconds for a winning time of 3:38.25.
The Gold and White will head back to Danville, Ky., for their next set of competitions, two weeks from their meet against West Virginia Tech. The next time they compete they'll be in the pool against Sewanee, the inner-conference matchup taking place on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. ET.
