Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – After a historic 2021 season, the Centre men's tennis team (1-0) traveled south to kick off the 2022 campaign. The Colonels faced off against Covenant (0-1) on Saturday afternoon, the Gold and White taking down the Scots on a 6-3 final score.
The Colonels won the majority in the doubles series after the top two pairs prevailed in their Scots matchup. The No. 1 duo of sophomore
Bo Bush and freshman
Jasper Gazzo claimed their victory on a final score of 8-6, while the No. 2 slot of seniors
Danny Nelson and
Matthew Bulow also finished their series on an 8-6 final score. Those two wins now make seven-straight regular season matches where they win the majority of doubles points.
The Gold and White were dominant in the singles series, claiming wins in four of the six matchups. Two of those four wins came from behind after dropping the first set in the series, Gazzo winning the No. 3 series 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-5 and
Emerson Dean's comeback win in the No. 6 slots ended at a score of 4-6, 7-5, 10-6.
The other two singles series came from the No. 4 and 5 slots, both ending as hard-fought wins to help Centre prevail.
Ashton Whitt was in the former series, getting a fast start in his path to victory 6-2, 7-6 (4). Bulow was the final Gold and White point to end the afternoon, securing his hard-fought win 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
UP NEXT
The Colonels will regroup and look to create a win streak next week, taking on Campbellsville University on Wednesday, Feb. 16. That match will take place in Danville at the Centre Tennis Courts, the first serve starting at 5 p.m.
