Centre baseball rally comes up short at Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Centre baseball continued its early season road trip as the Colonels traveled to Spalding. The Colonels dug themselves an early hole, came back strong, twice coming within one run, but could never get the equalizing run across, losing 7-5.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- The Golden Eagles got on the board first with three runs in the first inning, but Centre began chipping away as Josh Cunningham drilled a long fly ball into the trees in left center field to plate the first run of the day for the Colonels. One inning later, Micah Cowen delivered a solo homer to almost the exact location as Cunningham's for his first career long ball, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
- Spalding tacked on two more runs in the third inning, but Centre got one back as Jamie Laframboise walked with two outs, advanced to second on a balk, then got all the way home after a pair of Spalding wild pitches.
- Trailing 6-3 in the 7th, Laframboise ignited another run, leading off with a hit by pitch. Singles by Jordan Gunter and Mark Pyburn led to a quick run for the Colonels. Patrick Hope was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and an RBI groundout by Cunningham plated the second run of the inning for Centre, cutting the Spalding lead to 6-5.
- Centre threatened one final time in the eighth with Cowen on third and Gunter on second, but Hope's ground ball was snagged behind the back by the Spalding pitcher to put an end to the rally.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Cunningham and Gunter led the way for the Colonels with two hits each.
- Base running played a role in tonight's outcome, with Centre going 0 for 2 on stolen base opportunities and Spalding going 4 for 5. All four of Spalding's base stealers eventually scored.

NEXT UP

Centre baseball will open conference play with a trip to Mississippi and a weekend series against Millsaps. The Colonels took three of four from the Majors last season, including a pair of dramatic comebacks in a doubleheader on Mar. 27.
