Ninth inning rally falls short for Centre baseball against Transylvania

DANVILLE, Ky. – After a two-week absence, the Centre baseball team finally returned to Gary Wright Field at Fishman Park as they played a rescheduled game against the Transylvania Pioneers. The Colonels got off to a hot start, but Transy rebounded with 12 unanswered runs as Centre's ninth inning rally wasn't enough to avoid a 13-9 loss.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- After the Pioneers manufactured a run in the top of the first, the Colonels immediately got that run back in their half of the inning as Jordan Gunter blasted a leadoff homer onto Roy Arnold Blvd., the first ever home run hit by a Centre player in the Colonels' new stadium.
- Following a Josh Cunningham double and a walk to Dillon Di Iorio, Karson Thompson put Centre on top with a sacrifice bunt that scored Cunningham. Braden Wilson then doubled to make it 3-1, and Will Cline capped off the inning with a towering two-run homer to center field to put the Colonels up by four runs.
- Transylvania chipped away at the lead, scoring runs on a wild pitch in the third and a sac fly in the fourth.
- In the sixth, the Pioneer bats caught fire as they took the lead with six runs on six hits, a wild pitch and an error. Transy tacked on four more insurance runs in the seventh to create a large cushion.
- Centre battled back in the ninth as Teddy Holloway cracked a pinch hit double down the right field line that scored a pair of runs. Centre added two more after Wilson scored on a passed ball and Holloway scored following an RBI groundout from Robert Monaco, but the run ended there as Transy ended the rally with a strikeout.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Gunter, Cunningham and Wilson paced the Colonels with two hits each.
- In addition to Gunter's history-making blast, Cline's first inning homer was the first of his collegiate career.
- The Centre bats had no answer for reliever Jake Schmidt, who entered the game in the second inning and threw five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out eight.
