SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Centre baseball team embarked on the final road trip of the regular season as they played the first of three games against the Sewanee Tigers. Centre shut down the Tigers offense after the third inning and cruised to a 10-5 series-opening win.

Jordan Gunter and
Mark Pyburn led off the game with walks to immediately put a runner in scoring position for the Colonels.
Josh Cunningham reached on an error that allowed the first runner of the game to score. An RBI groundout by
Patrick Hope plated another and Centre quickly had a 2-0 lead.
- After Sewanee tied the game in their half of the first, Centre retook the lead in a wild second inning.
Braden Wilson led off with a walk and
Luc Morgan was hit by a pitch. The runners were sacrificed over and then
Conner Jackson walked to load the bases. Gunter singled to the right side to put Centre back on top, and a sacrifice fly by Pyburn plated another run for the Colonels. Cunningham walked to load the bases once more, and the Colonels added two more runs as Hope worked a bases loaded walk and
Karson Thompson was hit by a pitch with the sacks packed, giving Centre four runs in the inning on just one hit.
- Sewanee recorded singles in five of their first six plate appearances in the third inning, scoring three runs. Starter
Jess Miller eventually pitched out of trouble and found a groove for the rest of his time on the mound.
- In the top of the fourth, Gunter led off with a deep blast to right center field to give the Colonels an insurance run. The Colonels tacked on another in the fifth when
Luc Morgan walked and
Perry Nadreau smacked a triple into the gap to make it 8-5.
- The Colonels put runners at the corners in the eighth and when Hope attempted to steal second, the pitcher turning his back for a split second was all Pyburn needed to make a break for the plate, juking the Sewanee catcher and stealing home for Centre's ninth run of the game.
- The last run of the game came in the top of the ninth as the bottom of the order produced once again. Morgan doubled into the corner and for the second time today, Nadreau brought him home with a base hit. Morgan then moved to the mound to relieve Miller and record the final three outs.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Gunter's homer gives him three for the year, tied for the team lead.
- Nadreau had another productive day at the plate, picking up three hits and driving in a pair.
- After almost giving up the lead in the third, Miller settled down to retire 17 of the last 19 batters he faced as he pitched eight innings. Sewanee only managed one hit after the third inning.
