Colonels drop Senior Day doubleheader to Oglethorpe in extras

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre baseball program honored its seniors and alumni in the final doubleheader of the regular season as they hosted the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels. The Colonels dropped both games of the doubleheader in extra innings.

Game 1: Oglethorpe 5, Centre 2 (10 innings)

- In a touching moment, senior catcher and team leader Will Ahrens, who suffered a season-ending leg injury in the opening series at Gary Wright Field at Fishman Park, got a senior day start for Centre and caught one pitch before yielding to Perry Nadreau.
- The Colonels got on the board first as Nadreau and Conner Jackson delivered consecutive doubles in the bottom of the second to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
- Oglethorpe led off with a solo homer to tie the game in the fifth, but Centre came back with a run in the sixth as Josh Cunningham hit a leadoff single, swiped a pair of bases and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Perry Nadreau.
- The Petrels tied the game in the top of the eighth, and the Colonels put three runners in scoring position over their next two innings, but failed to get any of them across as the game went into extras.
- In the tenth inning, Oglethorpe manufactured three runs on two infield hits, two walks, an error and a sacrifice fly to take a 5-2 lead, and the bullpen sealed the win.

Game 2: Oglethorpe 8, Centre 5 (8 innings)

- The second game was a back and forth battle as both teams scored runs in the opening frame. Two consecutive hit batters led to Luc Morgan delivering a base hit that deflected off the pitcher and scored Patrick Hope.
- Trailing 3-1 in the third, the Colonels got one back as Cunningham led off with a walk and eventually scored on a passed ball.
- Oglethorpe returned the favor with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Colonels answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. Karson Thompson lined a double into the gap and scored on a shot up the middle by Morgan to make it 4-3.
- In Centre's half of the sixth, Mark Pyburn led off with a walk and pinch runner Cole Fergusson scored following a sac fly by Cunningham to tie the score.
- The Colonels put runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh, but again failed to cap off the rally as the Petrels forced the game into extra innings.
- Oglethorpe quickly struck in the eighth inning as they scored four runs on six hits. The Colonels got one back as Cunningham launched a ball over the left field fence, but could not get the tying run to the plate as the Petrels took the 8-5 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES
