Pool records fall in Colonel Classic

DANVILLE, Ky. – After a successful first session on Friday night that including breaking a 16-year old pool record, the Centre swimming & diving teams followed up that with another outstanding performance in day two of the Colonel Classic on Saturday. The day's set of events were split into several sessions, and both Gold & White programs emerged victorious with 100-point or more team wins. The men won with 815.5 points (a 239-point victory over second-place Franklin) and the women totaled 769 points on their way to victory (a 106.5-point advantage over second-place Indiana Wesleyan).
 
The Colonels' divers competed between swimming sessions, Brandon Anderson highlighting the day with a second-place performance on the men's one-meter set. The freshman totaled 252.9 points, jumping over the third-place competitor by almost 21 points. Jonah Crenshaw (154.4 points) and Sam Feingold (142.85 points) also placed in the event's top five, the duo earning fourth and fifth, respectfully. Gracie O'Brien represented the women with a sixth-place performance on the board, totaling 156.9 points in the event.
 
The morning session kicked off with a pair of wins in the 200 medley relay for Centre, Sarah Albrecht, Natalie Cox, Emma Daman and Elise Burch solidifying a win by over two-seconds with a final time of 1:54.16. The men found similar success in the event from their 1:37.82 swim, the team of Dustin Niebauer, Ben Wafford, Jackson Fears and Kai Oddo combining for a 1.86-second victory.
 
Centre took two of the three top spots in the women's 400 IM moments later, Audrey Becker leading the charge with a 4:53.4 time in the event for a silver medal. Greer Manger touched the wall around five seconds behind her senior teammate for the bronze spot in the results, Manger earning a 4:58.5 final time in the event. Calvin Mar was the lone Colonel to finish for the men inside the top three slots, the freshman dropping over three seconds from his best time to gather a bronze medal from his 4:35.08 performance. Jacob Sanders also rounded out the top-five spots for Centre with a 4:45.19 time.
 
The Gold & White dominated the women's 100 fly, slotting both the top two spots and a third one inside the events top four on Saturday. Callie West was the meet's lone competitor to finish the race in under a minute, winning her almost four-second victory with a :58.93 final time. Freshman Emma Daman edged out the third-place finisher thanks to a second 50 yards that was .94 seconds faster, earning second place from a 1:02.41 finish. Fears appeared in the men's top two spots, touching the wall on a :53.31 final time for second place overall. Senior Austen Reid would be right behind Fears at third place in the meet, finishing on a :55.22 final time.
 
Elise Burch and Anneliese Thomas made their way into the Colonel Classic's top three in the women's 200 free, Burch getting credited the event victory off a 1:59.66 time (the only sub two-minute competitor). Thomas' 2:06.14 time for third place was neck-and-neck the entire time to Olivia Headley's fourth-place finish, Thomas touching out her freshman teammate by .03 seconds.
 
The women would later go one-two in the 100 breast, Natalie Cox pushing a sub-1:10 time to claim victory in her 1:09.95 performance. McKenzie Tucker finished close behind her in her 1:12.78 race, touching the wall for second place overall in the event. The men's side would claim all the medals for the Gold & White, Fears touching first on a 1:02.84 final time. Less than a second behind him was Wafford in a 1:03.68 performance for second place overall, Feingold jumping into the pool for a bronze medal off his 1:04.4 swim in the event.
 
Oddo would continue to orchestrate his dominant performance by claiming another event win, this time in the men's 100 back. The junior touched :52.55 for a final time that beat out the second-place finisher by .85 seconds. Dustin Niebauer rounded out the top-three spots in the event for Centre, the freshman touching on a :53.64 final time.
 
Centre would find success in another set of relays in the 800 free, the women touching on a 8:07.27 time for almost a 14-second win by Caroline Lee, Burch, Manger and West. The men battled against Asbury and emerged as the second-place finisher by a little less than three seconds, the team of Fears, Wyatt Fulton, George Von Canon and Henry Lang touching the wall at a 7:21.69 total.
 
The 1650 free featured a pair of medals from the two programs, Samantha Coffey reaching for silver by over 11 seconds on an 18:58.65 final time for the women. Von Canon would round out the men's top-three finishers by almost 35 seconds, the freshman finishing his race in 18:08.47.
 
A pair of Centre student-athletes would appear in the men's 200 back, Niebauer finishing second on a 2:03.61 performance. David Pingleton would touching for a bronze medal in the event, his final time being set at 2:04.04.
 
Centre later claimed all of the top four spots in the women's 100 free, West leading the charge for a :54.0 final time. Manger earned a silver medal on a :55.48 performance, .41 seconds ahead of senior teammate Burch's :55.89 time. Headley would claim the fourth spot in the event for the Gold & White in her :56.87 finish. Oddo would break his second pool record of the weekend on the men's side, his :47.41 final time breaking the previous mark by .01 seconds. Oddo's historic time would beat out the second-place finisher by .57 seconds.
 
The Colonels took the top two spots later in the women's 200 breast, the freshman duo of Natalie Cox (2:35.63) and McKenzie Tucker (2:37.67) extending the Gold & White's lead in the team totals. Wafford for earn a victory on the men's side for the Centre freshman sweep, the Louisville, Ky., native touching out the second-place finisher by less than .7 seconds off a 2:20.54 final time.
 
Becker was the lone Colonel in the women's 200 fly top three spots, touching the wall on a 2:19.64 final time for third place overall. Fears and Reid would emerge inside the men's top three slots in the event, Fears touching second place on a 1:58.93 final time and Reid slotting in a 2:03.99 time for third.
 
The women's events concluded with a Centre win in the 400 free relay, the team's near-10 second victory coming from Burch, Lee, Manger and West for a 3:41.25 final time. The men would end the meet in the runner-up spot in the 400 free relay, the A-team of Lang, Fulton, Fears and Oddo combined for a 3:20.67 final time.
 
With the Colonels' long weekend officially wrapped up, the teams will reset and prepare for the final stretch before the SAA championships next month. Their first meet before then will be on Friday, Jan. 20 in Danville, Ky., racing against the visiting Transylvania Pioneers. That meet will start at 6:30 p.m. ET.

DAY ONE (Friday)
The Centre swimming & diving teams kicked off their two-day meet in Boles Natatorium on Friday night, the men and women both taking an early lead after session one of the Colonel Classic. The men built a 89-point lead on second-place Franklin with 244 total points, the women reaching a 55-point margin against Indiana Wesleyan with 239 team points.
 
The Gold & White started the day off with a dominant performance in the women's 200 free relay, taking the top two spots in the event. The winning squad of Olivia Headley, Greer Manger, Caroline Lee and Callie West combined for a 1:40.17 final time, out-racing all the other competitors by at least 2.96 seconds. The runner-up time of 1:43.13 was also owned by the Colonels, consisting of Elise Burch, Emma Daman, Natalie Cox and Claire Pellegrin. The men were able to capitalize on an excellent follow-up performance soon after, the program's A relay of Wyatt Fulton, Henry Lang, Eli Merritt and Kai Oddo out-split second-place Franklin by .13 seconds for a final winning time of 1:29.1.
 
Centre placed a pair of student-athletes inside the meet's top five in the women's 500 free, junior Manger and freshman Samantha Coffey placing fourth and third overall in the event, respectively. Coffey's bronze-medal finish came way by a 5:30.66 final time, Manger only .06 seconds behind her to finish at 5:30.72.
 
One of the men's strongest events on Friday came way by the 200 IM, slotting three swimmers inside the event's top five that also included a champion. Dustin Neibauer topped the event as the only student-athlete to earn a sub-two minute race, the freshman's 1:59.44 time beating out the second-place finisher by over four seconds. The Colonels' other top-five members included another set of freshman in Calvin Mar at fourth (2:05.17) and Ben Wafford at fifth (2:05.32). The women stacked a pair of their own inside the 200 IM's top four places, McKenzie Tucker leading the Gold & White on a final 2:17.79 time for silver with Audrey Becker at fourth with a 2:18.24 swim in the event.
 
Continuing to build on their success, Centre eventually swept all four of the top places in the women's 50 free, 2022 All-American West leading the charge with her :24.81 winning time. Senior-teammate Burch would jump up to second overall in the event with a :25.28, beating out teammate Lee's third place performance of :25.44 by just .16 seconds. Headley would round out the Colonels' stellar performance just .45 seconds behind Lee, finishing her race on a :25.89 final time. Kai Oddo would respond with a dominant swim of his own in the men's side of the event, winning the 50 free for Centre by over a second to the second-place competitor, earning a final time of :21.47. The junior's stellar performance also set a historic mark for the program, breaking the pool record originally set in 2007.
 
In the final set of events for the evening, Centre would end the night strong with a six-second victory in the women's 400 medley relay, Cox's 1:09.29 split as the breastroke leg was a seven-second advantage to the second-place finisher's leg in the event. Cox would swim with Lee, West and Manger in the relay to combine for a 4:06.1 final time, the program's B relay ending in third overall as well.
