Men’s tennis caps Virginia trip at W&L

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Centre men's tennis team (0-3) wrapped up their weekend stretch of games in Virginia on Sunday, competing in their closest competition of the season. The Colonels faced off against Washington & Lee before heading back to Kentucky, falling on a dual 6-3.

The Gold and White kicked off with the doubles matches, both the no. 1 and no. 2 series during the paired matches had a similar 8-5 score, in favor of the Generals. The Bush brothers in Ty and Bo teamed up as the team's no. 1, their third tour together as the lineup's top spot so far this season. Ben Rueff and Jasper Gazzo would duo again for the second time in 2023, once again running as the team's no. 2 doubles team. Faraz Ghamgosar and Chase Turley would be back in action in the third spot of the doubles lineup, falling on a final score of 8-3.

The Colonels would split Washington & Lee in the singles matches, earning three wins on the day that mark milestone wins for the student-athletes and program. Two different Centre players would earn their first collegiate win, the freshman Ty Bush and Rueff would earn victories in the singles lineup. Ty Bush flashed a fast start in his no. 2 match that pushed a third set, winning 6-2, 3-6 (10-7). Rueff would have a battle tooth-and-nail, but in the extras he would push the gap wider to a final 7-5, 4-6 (10-6). The final win would come from Bo Bush, the junior posting a close battle with a 6-2, 4-6 (10-7) victory. Ghamgosar would fall in his singles match as the lineup's no. 1, his score finishing in a 6-4, 6-3 final stat line. Jett Anderson made his first appearance as the team's no. 4 so far this season, but couldn't find the win 6-2, 6-2. Chase Turley put up a tough fight in the no. 5 match, but the Generals opponent knocked out the freshman on a close 7-5, 6-4 final score.

Centre will head back home to Kentucky for their next set of matches, hosting matches on campus until the first week of March. They'll first face off against Denison, that home match kicking off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18.
