DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre baseball team picked up its first wins of the season as they earned a Saturday doubleheader sweep, defeating Penn State Behrend 12-5 and following that up with a 4-3 win over Dominican.
Game 1: Centre 12, PSB 5
-
Josh Cunningham led off with a base hit to center and advanced to third on a misplay.
Dillon Di Iorio then ripped a base hit up the middle to plate the first run of the game. A double by
Karson Thompson and a walk to
Will Cline loaded the bases and
Chase Austin's sacrifice fly made it a 2-0 game.
- The Lions got a run back in the second, but Centre answered in their half of the inning.
Jamie Laframboise led off with a single and
Evan Weyler walked. Di Iorio singled again to load the bases and an error gave the Colonels a 3-1 lead.
- Leading 3-2 in the fourth, Di Iorio led off with a walk and Thompson was hit by a pitch.
Chase Austin went the other way with a base hit to put Centre back up by two, and then
Luc Morgan hit a double over the center fielder's head to score two more. Following a walk to
Aaron Lopez, Laframboise delivered his third hit of the game for the fourth run of the inning.
- The Lions staged a two-out rally in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-5, but Centre answered back in the bottom half. Thompson led off with an infield hit and stole a pair of bases. Cline and
Conner Jackson walked to load the bases again and Lopez was hit by a pitch to make it 8-5. Laframboise then hit one off the base of the left field wall to score two more and create even more distance at 10-5.
- Thompson led off the sixth with a double and eventually scored on an RBI single from Lopez to put the Colonels up by six. The last run came in the seventh as Cunningham was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on an infield hit by Thompson.
Game 2: Centre 4, Dominican 3
- Cunningham again got the Colonels off to a hot start as he led off with a double. Di Iorio then singled and a Dominican error allowed the first run to cross the plate.
- In the third, Centre loaded the bases without having to swing the bat as two walks and a hit by pitch packed them up.
Chase Austin then delivered a clutch single to score Cunningham and Di Iorio to make it 3-0.
- Dominican got on the board with three straight hits to plate a run and put runners on second and third, but
David Sickles came on in relief to pitch his way out of the jam and avoid further damage.
- The Stars added another run in the fifth to make it 3-2, where it stayed for the next few innings. Centre added an insurance run in the seventh on another RBI from Thompson.
- It turned out Centre needed the extra run as Dominican got one back in the eighth, but
