Centre baseball drops 8-4 series opener to Vikings

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre baseball team kicked off the final conference series of the regular season as they hosted the Berry Vikings at Gary Wright Field. The Vikings took the series opener by a score of 8-4.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- Berry got on the board first in the second after three hits and a sac fly. They added another run in the third before Centre made its first rally.
- Trailing 3-0 in the third, Josh Cunningham ripped a double down the left field line. Ben Prather lined a base hit up the middle to plate Cunningham and score the first run of the day for the Colonels.
- The Vikings increased the lead to 5-1 following a two-run homer in the fourth, but Centre responded in the bottom half of the inning. A base hit by Chase Austin and a double into the gap by Teddy Holloway put runners on second and third with no outs. The Colonels got those runners across the plate on productive outs from Mark Pyburn and Evan Weyler to make it a 5-3 game.
- In the fifth, the Vikings tacked on two more runs to make it 7-3. The Colonels again answered in their next trip to the plate as consecutive doubles by Cunningham and Dillon Di Iorio cut the deficit to 7-4.
- From there, the offensive productivity halted. Centre loaded the bases with two outs in both the seventh and eighth, but could not come up with the big hit. Berry added a run on a wild pitch in the eighth to provide the final score.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- The Colonels finished with 15 hits in the game, led by Cunningham, Di Iorio and Austin with three each.
