BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Centre women's tennis team (12-6, 5-2 SAA) took on their final regular season match on Sunday, traveling south for an inner-conference matchup against the Birmingham-Southern Panthers. The Colonels ended the season with a high note before their run for a conference championship, taking down the Panthers on a 7-2 final score.
The Gold & White picked up a fast start after the doubles matches concluded, Centre coming away with wins in all the three series that took place.
Grace Williams and
Carlie Mitchell continued their hot hands this season with a swift 8-2 win, the freshman duo garnering Centre's first point of the day from the no. 2 spot of the order. Senior duo
Ella Rueff and
Lainey Hill picked up their second win in a row on Sunday, coming out of a close 8-5 finish at the top of the lineup to give the Colonels the advantage.
Maddy Trinh and
Kayla Harger fought a back-and-forth duel in the no. 3 series, coming back from a 4-1 deficit to complete the team doubles sweep on an 8-6 final score.
Centre continued their dominance in the singles portion of the contest, taking home the first three matches to seal their 12th win of the season. Trinh put another outstanding showcase from the no. 4 spot of the order, sweeping her opponent on a perfect 6-0, 6-0 score. The no. 3 series followed through on a dominant second set, Mitchell rounding out her first collegiate regular season on a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Hill kept the pace for the Colonels at the no. 2 spot of the lineup, also pushing through a strong back half in her 6-4, 6-1 win. Her senior doubles partner would prevail past a tough second-set series, Rueff in the no. 1 spot of the lineup finishing the day in the 6-4, 7-6 win. BSC took two singles matches with them at the no. 5 and no. 6 spots of the lineup,
Mamie Sevier (6-7, 6-2, 10-6) and Harger (2-6, 6-1, 10-7) taking their opponent to a third set, respectively.
The Gold & White will next compete in the 2023 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Women's Tennis Tournament, kicking off on Friday, April 28 and run through Sunday, April 30 at the Champions Club Tennis Complex in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Colonels have solidified the third seed in the conference tournament, but it has yet to be decided who exactly they'll face off in the opening round.
