DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre baseball team returned to conference play with the first of three games against the Sewanee Tigers. The Colonels took the first game of the series by winning a pitchers' duel by a score of 3-1.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Tigers cracked the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning on a leadoff walk and RBI single. From there, things slowed down offensively as both pitchers got into a groove.
- Centre broke through in the bottom of the fifth as
Jamie Laframboise,
Evan Weyler and
Josh Cunningham delivered consecutive hits up the middle to tie the game at 1-1.
- Both offenses continued to stall in the later innings. Sewanee put a runner on in the eighth, but
Cam Tegge picked him off to end the inning and preserve the 1-1 tie.
- In Centre's half of the eighth, Weyler led off with another line drive shot through the infield for a base hit.
Dillon Di Iorio singled and
Ben Prather was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A fielder's choice by
Karson Thompson resulted in a pair of runs to put the Colonels on top by a 3-1 margin.
- Sewanee threatened in the ninth inning, putting runners on the corners, but Thompson made a fantastic diving stop on a ball in the infield to record the putout for the 27th out of the game and the 21st win of the year for the Colonels.
