Claunch sets two school records as Colonels win Centre Invite

DANVILLE, Ky. – It was another eventful day for Centre women's track & field as the Colonels hosted the Centre Indoor Invite inside Champions Hall. The Colonels used their depth and versatility to top the field of teams from all divisions, including two new school records established.
 
The Centre women accumulated 172 points to get the win today, 20 points ahead of second place Lincoln Memorial University. Lindsey Wilson, Berea and Kentucky State rounded out the top five team finishes in that order.
 
The distance races were major scoring events for Centre. In the women's 5k, Cara Taylor picked up the win as she crossed the finish line in 18:38.66. She was followed by Rachel Gaynor, who took fourth place with a time of 19:57.92. The 3000m saw Lily Matthiessen finish fourth overall in a time of 11:52.56, with Caroline Buckle (12:45.42) and Gillian Day (13:17.40) each getting into the scoring column as well. In the mile, Sophie Bouldin finished in second place with a time of 5:16.19, while Emma Musgrave took sixth overall with a time of 5:30.27. Bouldin also took third place in the mile with a time of 2:25.70, with Musgrave, Erin Haugh and Kate Keller each landing inside the top eight.
 
In the sprints, Jasmine Claunch tied a program record in the 60m with a time of 7.84 in the preliminary rounds. Madjo Doumbia came close to hitting the record mark in the finals with a time of 7.86 to finish second overall. Chloe Hein finished right behind her at 7.99. Doumbia had another second place finish in the 200m as she posted a time of 26.04. In the 400m, Hein took sixth place overall with a time of 1:03.16, with Ainsley Wilson finishing right behind at 1:03.42. Finally, in the 60m hurdles, Joyner Jikang took third in 10.03, with Callie Gormley taking fourth place in 10.27.
 
Moving to the field events, the Colonels had the top three marks in the triple jump. Claunch broke her 2023 record in the event by a quarter of an inch after posting a mark of 39-10.25. Serena McNeilly (37-4) and Shelby Smith (36-5.75) rounded out the top three in that order, while Kiyah King posted a mark of 32-2.25 to give Centre four scorers in the event. Centre also had three of the top five finishers in the long jump. Hein took second place with a mark of 17-5.75, followed by Gormley in third at 16-11.25 and Smith in fifth at 16-4. In the high jump, McNeilly got the win after clearing 5-3. Riley Brown had a clear of 4-9 to take fifth place.
 
Finally, in the throws, it was a great day for Lauren Foutch, who picked up wins in both events as she posted marks of 38-11 to win the shot put and 51-8 in the weight throw. Lindsey Browning gave the Colonels another five points in the weight throw as she finished fourth overall with a mark of 44-0.

The Colonels will return to Wittenberg on Feb. 17 to compete in the Wittenberg Invitational.
