LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Centre baseball played its first away game of the season as the Colonels headed up the road to battle the always tough Spalding Golden Eagles. Thanks to timely hitting and taking advantage of defensive miscues, Centre came from behind for a 9-3 victory.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The host Golden Eagles turned a walk into a run in each of the first two innings, the second one unearned following a Centre error.
- The Colonels couldn't crack the Spalding pitching until the top of the fifth, when a pair of Spalding errors resulted in
Ayden Lohr ending up on third base. With two outs,
Josh Cunningham ripped a clutch double down the left field line to cut the deficit in half.
- In the sixth inning, the Colonels looked to take the lead as they loaded the bases with one out, but Spalding got out of the jam and headed into the seventh with the one-run lead intact.
- Lohr led off Centre's half of the seventh with a walk. An error put Lohr on third and Cunningham on second, and an RBI groundout by
Chase Austin tied the score.
- The rally continued as
Ben Prather went the other way for a base hit to score Cunningham and put Centre on top for the first time. An
Evan Weyler double then made it 4-2.
- With two outs in the inning,
Karson Thompson singled to plate another run, stole second and eventually scored after two straight Spalding balks to cap off the Centre rally and give the Colonels a 6-2 lead.
- Cunningham jumpstarted another Centre rally as he led off the top of the eighth with a base hit, stole second, advanced to third after a pickoff attempt went awry and eventually scored after Prather was intentionally walked and Weyler singled through the left side. The Colonels added two more runs on a single by
Aaron Lopez and an RBI groundout by Thompson to grab a 9-2 advantage.
- The Golden Eagles managed one run in the ninth but no more as the Colonels slammed the door on the rally.
