Centre baseball earns doubleheader sweep at Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. – The Centre baseball team hit the road for a critical series against the Millsaps Majors. In Saturday's doubleheader, the Colonels won game 1 11-1 and then took a 2-0 pitching duel in game 2.

Game 1: Centre 11, Millsaps 1

- Luc Morgan pitched his way out of a jam in the first inning by inducing a 6-4-3 double play, and then the offense helped him out with a crooked inning their next time at bat.
- Josh Cunningham led off the top of the second getting hit by a pitch. Michael Lynch walked, and then a balk advanced the runners into scoring position. Jamie Laframboise snuck one through the infield to plate the game's first run, and following a Millsaps error, the Colonels took a 2-0 lead.
- The Colonels manufactured a run in the third as Ben Prather worked a leadoff walk and advanced on a passed ball and a groundout before Cunningham drove him in with a sac fly.
- Centre broke the game open in the fifth, loaded the bases on singles by Chase Austin and Cunningham and another Lynch walk. With two outs, Laframboise ripped a double down the line to score a pair of runs. After Connor Jackson walked to reload the bases, Karson Thompson pulled one over the left field fence for a grand slam to make it a 9-1 game.
- In the seventh, Centre opened the door for the run rule as Thompson and Prather came through with RBI singles to make it 11-1. The Majors got two runners on in their half of the inning, but Morgan slammed the door on the 11-1 victory.

Game 2: Centre 2, Millsaps 0

- The first three innings of the game belonged to the pitchers. Prather got the start for the Colonels and got into some trouble in the third after loading the bases, but escaped the predicament to preserve the scoreless tie.
- In the fourth, Cunningham led off with a base hit. Prather then helped his own cause by belting a double into the gap, allowing Cunningham to score all the way from first. With two outs, Ayden Lohr went the other way with a base hit to score Prather and make it a 2-0 Centre lead.
- Zach Heavern relieved Prather in the sixth and pitched a pair of scoreless innings for the save, striking out the final batter of the game to secure the doubleheader sweep.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES

- Morgan had his best outing of the season in game 1, going the distance while allowing seven hits and just one run on a solo homer. He did not allow a hit with runners in scoring position.
- Nine of Centre's 11 runs in game 1 were driven in by the bottom of the order, led by five RBIs from Thompson.
- Prather picked up the victory in game 2 for his sixth win of the year while also driving in what proved to be the game-winning run.
