Feature Part 3: National champion Chloe Hein Enjoyed Chance to Learn From Olympians

6/30/2026 11:30:00 AM

Danville, Ky.

(This is part three of a four-part series with Centre College national champion Chloe Hein).

Just two weeks after winning the NCAA Division III Outdoor long jump championship and placing fifth in the triple jump and 100-meter dash, Centre College junior Chloe Hein was working as a counselor at the annual Maximum Velocity Track & Field Academy for the first time.

"I was doing research (at the University of Iowa) last summer, so I couldn't volunteer to help but the camp was really fun," said Hein. "Coach (Lisa) Owens always sends out an email asking if anybody on the team wants to volunteer to work the camp. I didn't have anything else to do over the summer so it worked out.

"I love being with all the Olympians that come in (to work as clinicians). You cannot pass up that opportunity to work with them."

Hein left the coaching to Dwight Phillips, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist in the long jump. He was a two-time Olympian and four-time long jump gold medalist at the World Outdoor Championships.

"I basically just raked the pit for them, but still being able to listen to the Olympians coach somebody, especially of different skill sets, is really impressive," Hein said. "Even learning the foundations is so pivotal to anybody that does long jump."

Hein, who also won the 2026 NCAA Division III Indoor long jump national championship, was eager to learn from the Olympians.

"I showed the long jump Olympian (Phillips) my video from nationals. He had a few comments on it," Hein said. "I was really curious because a lot of the things he said were things that I've been working on, and it just didn't show up in the jump that I did (at nationals).

"He didn't say anything specifically about what was right or not right. He did comment on the videos that I showed him, I also talked to the sprints Olympian (two-time gold medalist Lashawn Merritt) that was here. I talked to him about my block start. My coaches here are really good, but another's perspective is always really pivotal to know."
