Currie Martin

Currie Martin joined the Centre athletics staff as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach in the summer of 2015. He also serves as Centre’s Director of Intramurals.

For six seasons in a row, both the men’s and the women’s teams have earned ITA All-Academic Team honors under Martin. The men were also honored with the Men’s Team Academic Achievement Award at the 2018 Centre Athletics Awards Show.

Most recently, Martin guided both of his squads to the championship round of the SAA Tournament, the women finished the year with a 9-7 (5-1 SAA) record, the men sitting at 8-8 (4-2 SAA) to conclude the season.

Centre’s women’s tennis team ended the 2021 spring season ranked ninth in the highly competitive Athletic South Region, as decided by the ITA. Their 36th Division III team ranking were complimented by a handful of student-athletes also making the ranks, the duo of Ella Rueff and Lainey Hill being noted at the No. 13 spot in the final ITA regional doubles ranking. Katherine Sherman found a spot as one of Division III’s top 25 individual student-athletes, the then-junior earning a No. 22 rank in the Athletic South Region.

The men’s tennis team were led by then-senior Arpit Rana, being named the 2021 Atlantic South Region Most Improved Senior by the ITA. Rana and Ashton Whitt would be recognized as members of the All-SAA First Team in the 2021 season, Rana capping his college career with his third All-SAA honor (All-SAA Second Team in 2018 and 2019). Faraz Ghamgosar would also toss his name into the All-SAA list, the then-sophomore being selected for the Second Team.

Five women would see themselves in the All-SAA list in 2021, tying Millsaps with the most honorees overall in the conference. Sherman garnered her second All-SAA First Team nod in her career, Rueff claiming her first All-SAA First Team honor as a Colonel. Caroline Stallings and Hannah Doherty would be recognized as All-SAA Second Team selections for the second time at Centre, while Hill would collect her first career nod on the All-SAA Second Team.

The Colonels men’s and women’s tennis teams finished the shortened 2020 campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic at records of 2-5 (0-1 SAA) and 2-8 (0-1 SAA), respectively. Sherman finished among the top women in Division III, ranking at the No. 43 spot nationally and No. 10 in the region, according to the ITA. Her finish in the region was noted as the highest of any women’s tennis student-athlete from the Southern Athletic Association that season.

Martin guided the women's team to a 10-8 overall record and 6-1 finish in the SAA, reaching the finals of the SAA Tournament. His women's squad finished the season ranked among the top teams in the region by the ITA, while Katharine Sherman (No. 17) and Neha Rao (No. 20) were in the top 20 singles rankings. Sherman also brought home SAA Newcomer of the Year honors.

As a tandem, Neha Rao and Hannah Doherty finished 2018-19 ranked fifth in the region and 21st nationally as a doubles team.

His 2018-19 men's squad was led by All-SAA selections Arpit Rana and Max Middleton.

Martin had three All-SAA individuals on the women's team in 2018, including Abigail Kent, Eliza Williams and Caroline Stallings. Kent went on to finish among the Top 25 of the ITA Regional Singles rankings.

Arpit Rana highlighted Martin's 2018 men's squad, earning the program's first ever SAA Newcomer of the Year award.

In 2017 Martin guided the women's tennis team to the best season in program history, an SAA runner-up finish, as the doubles team of Neha Rao and Aliza Williams ended the season as one of the top tandems in the south region while freshman Abigail Kent finished with an undefeated singles record in conference play.

Martin arrived at Centre after two very successful seasons as assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at Sewanee, where he helped the Tigers’ men’s and women’s programs win SAA Championships in 2014 and 2015. During his tenure at Sewanee, Martin also coached three All-Americans, two SAA Players of the Year and six All-SAA players. In the 2015 season, Martin helped Sewanee achieve a #12 national ranking on the women’s side and a #28 national ranking on the men’s side, the first time Sewanee men’s tennis had achieved a national ranking in over five years. Martin also helped Sewanee bring in a top 20 nationally ranked recruiting class for Sewanee women’s tennis in 2014.

Prior to his time at Sewanee, Martin spent one year as assistant tennis coach at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. In his time at UMW, the Eagles pulled in a top 15 nationally ranked men’s tennis recruiting class and Martin helped coach the team to a 15th consecutive CAC conference title and NCAA Tournament berth, where they earned a #2 national seed. Martin coached one All-American, one CAC Player of the Year and six All-CAC players while at Mary Washington.

Martin was also the director of intramural sports at Sewanee, where he implemented a successful Intramural Cup initiative that saw a 40% increase in participation among Sewanee students, staff and faculty.

A native Mississippian, Martin is a graduate of Western Kentucky University, where he won over 110 matches in singles and doubles tennis with the Hilltoppers.
