Edwin Hagans joined the Centre coaching staff in the fall of 2013 after serving as the head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach at Lindsey Wilson College from 2005-2013. Hagans was promoted to Associate Head Coach in 2022 after his success building the Colonels' sprint program.
Since Hagans has been at Centre, the Colonels have won seven combined conference championships, including at least one All-American every year since 2016, most notably national champions Annie Rodenfels and JP Vaught.
As sprint coach, Hagans has worked directly with Vaught and helped him become one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of Centre College, as he has earned four national championships combined between indoor and outdoor track. Vaught's fourth national title came during the 200m at the 2022 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, also setting the NCAA DIII Outdoor record for the second time in five weeks.
Coming out of the canceled 2020 season, Hagans's sprinters have rewritten the Centre record books, combining for 18 men's and women's program records in their respective events since 2021. After a successful freshman season, he helped Madjo Doumbia emerge as the fastest woman to run for the Gold & White. During the 2023 outdoor season, she set four program highs and three gold medals at the SAA championships that season.
While at Lindsey Wilson he accomplished the following: 25 men's track & field school records and 38 women's track & field school records were broken during Edwin's direction as head coach. He also coached 35 National qualifiers and 14 All-Americans and received eight coach of the year awards during his time at LWC.
Prior to his time at Lindsey Wilson, Hagans was an assistant track and field coach at Berea College from 1995-2001. Hagans is a 1995 graduate of Berea College with a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and a 2003 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a Master of Science Degree in Physical Education and Sport Administration.Â
Edwin has been an amazing athlete in his time as well: Edwin was a collegiate All-American at Berea College in the 400 meter hurdles in 1995. Edwin has also been a Track & Field Masters All-American in the 110 meter hurdles, 400 meter hurdles, and the 60 meter hurdles. He currently holds the American Masters record in the shuttle hurdle relay and was the 400 meter hurdle Masters National Champion in 2012.
