SAA to Add Austin, Trinity for Football in 2017

ATLANTA, Ga. (CentreAthletics.com) – On Thursday the Southern Athletic Association announced that beginning in the 2017 season, the conference will add Austin College and Trinity University as competing schools in football.

Austin and Trinity will enter the conference after the end of the provisional memberships of Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Chicago as SAA football schools.

The Trinity Tigers, based out of San Antonio, Texas, finished with a record of 8-2 during the 2015 season, while the Austin Kangaroos, based out of Sherman, Texas, finished with a record of 5-5 in 2015.

Both schools competed against Centre when the Colonels played in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Austin joined the SCAC in 2006 and went 1-5 against Centre, with the Colonels holding a five-game winning streak.

Centre's last game against Austin came during the 2011 season when the Colonels shut out the Kangaroos 45-0 in Danville, the last shutout for Centre football until 2014's Senior Day shutout of Millsaps.

Trinity became one of the top teams in the entire South Region after the Tigers joined the SCAC. In the 2011 season that marked Centre's last in the SCAC, Trinity handed Centre its only regular season loss in a year that saw both teams make the Division III playoffs.

Centre last played Trinity in 2012, a 31-14 victory for the Colonels on a cold and rainy Homecoming Saturday.
