Box Score After falling twice to Birmingham-Southern during the 2012 season, the Centre men's lacrosse team got revenge in a 14-3 victory in a Southern Athletic Association game Sunday in Danville, Ky.
A year ago, BSC dealt Centre a loss on the final weekend of the regular season, then ended the Colonels' season a week later in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinals. Centre was in control throughout Sunday's meeting, however, taking a 3-0 lead after the first quarter, then building the lead to 8-2 by halftime after a stretch of four straight goals in the second quarter. After each team scored once in the third quarter, Centre pulled away in the fourth by outscoring the Panthers 5-0.
Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.) led the Colonels in scoring with three goals while Zack Connors (Louisville, Ky.) added two goals and three assists. Scott Hughes (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) also scored two goals each. Scoring single goals for Centre were Robert Anthony (Louisville, Ky.), Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.), Wesley Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.), Andrew Holmgren (Franklin, Tenn.) and Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.).
Centre took 45 shots to Birmingham-Southern's 35, and the Colonels held a 17-3 edge in faceoffs with Patrick Vaughn (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) winning 16 of 19. Centre goalie Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio) made 13 saves on 16 shots for an .812 save percentage.
Centre moves to 6-2 overall on the season with a 3-1 mark in SAA competition while Birmingham Southern falls to 4-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Colonels next host Transylvania on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
