Men's lacrosse downs Transy for fifth straight win

Box Score

The Centre men's lacrosse team captured its fifth straight win with a 19-8 victory over in-state rival Transylvania on Wednesday at Farris Stadium.

Leading the way offensively for the Colonels were Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.), who tallied six goals and an assist, and Zack Connors (Louisville, Ky.), who scored four times and broke his own school record for assists in a game with seven. The two factored heavily into the decisive stretch in the game, either scoring or assisting on all but two of the goals when the Colonels broke an early 2-2 tie by scoring 13 straight.

Following that first half surge, Centre took a 15-4 lead to halftime and built its lead to 17-4 in the opening minutes of the third quarter. With nearly every player on the Colonels' roster seeing action, Transylvania outscored Centre 4-2 in the final quarter to arrive at the 19-8 final.

Also scoring for the Colonels in the game were Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.), who scored two goals with an assist, as well as Scott Hughes (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Patrick Evans (Louisville, Ky.), Joey Lencewicz (Gates Mills, Ohio), Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.), Wesley Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.), Corey Krill (Louisville, Ky.) and Phillip Malloy (Louisville, Ky.). Clay Douthat led Transylvania with four goals.

Centre took 46 shots to Transylvania's 25 in the game. Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio), Clayton Brown (Louisville, Ky.) and Charles Treis (Cedar Grove, N.C.) split time in goal for Centre with Brown making four saves and McCoy two, while Joshua Slone made 10 stops for Transylvania.

Centre improves to 7-2 on the season while Transylvania falls to 7-5. The Colonels return to Southern Athletic Association play Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host Oglethorpe in the final home game of the regular season.
