Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (CentreAthletics.com) – Birmingham Southern's Alec Medd's goal in the 109th minute of Friday night's contest sealed a 1-0 double overtime win over the visiting Centre men's soccer team in a Southern Athletic Association matchup. The Colonels dropped to 6-6-1 overall and 2-2-0 in SAA action, while the Panthers improve to 10-2-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in conference play.
Centre was assessed a total of eight cards in the game, including three reds and five yellows, all coming in the second half or overtime. The Colonels played the final 16:07 of regulation with just nine players after a pair of red cards at the 73:53 mark of the second half.
Senior forward Connor Reed (Newbury Park, Calif.) nearly won the game with a shot in the closing seconds of the second half, but Birmingham Southern goalkeeper Marvin Castellanos made the save to send the SAA contest to overtime.
The Panthers used the two-man advantage to accumulate a 6-0 shot advantage in shots in the first overtime and a 2-0 edge in the second overtime.
After the two teams remained scoreless for the first 18:37 of overtime, the Colonels were given another red card, leaving the visitors another man down.
Just 28 seconds later, Chris Duffey found Medd for the game-winning goal for the Panthers.
Freshman forward Alexander Garuba (Norcross, Ga.) registered a team-high four shots for the Colonels, while junior forward Jacob Winkler (Danville, Ky.) added two shots in the game.
Freshman goalkeeper Bailey Spade (Frankfort, Ky.) played between the pipes for the Colonels, making seven saves on the night, including two in the overtime periods. Castellanos finished with six saves in the win.
The Panthers finished with a 20-13 advantage in shots.
Friday's game marked the third double overtime match for the Colonels this season, and the sixth for host Birmingham Southern.
Centre is back in action on Sunday, taking on Millsaps at 2:30 p.m. CT.
