Colonels ride hot start to 14-11 senior day win over BSC

The Centre women's lacrosse team won its second game in a row, taking advantage of a hot first half and celebrating its senior day with a 14-11 win over the Birmingham Southern Panthers.

Seven different players scored for the Colonels, led by Ellen Resinger (Louisville, Ky.) and Jacqueline Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) with three goals each. Anderson also topped the Colonels with two assists in the contest.

After Anderson scored the game's opening goal on an assist from Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.), the Panthers tied the score at 1-1 before the Colonels reeled off four straight goals. Haden Gibbons (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored twice during the rally with Andrea Wambaugh (Louisville, Ky.) and Ellen Resinger each adding goals to give the Colonels a 5-1 lead. The Panthers scored the next goal, but then Devin Baker (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored two goals in a row to make it 7-2. BSC put home the final goal of the period as the Colonels went into the locker room for halftime up by four.

The Colonels dominated the opening ten minutes of the second half as Anderson scored a pair of goals and Resinger added her second goal of the game to give Centre its biggest lead at 10-3. Birmingham Southern would catch fire and score five out of the next six goals in the game with Ellen Resinger's third and final goal as the only Centre tally during the stretch.

The run cut Centre's lead to 11-8, but the Colonels responded with three straight goals, two from Andrea Merchak (Lexington, Ky.) and the last goal of the game for Centre by Colleen Jackson (Gaithersburg, Md.). Down 14-8, the Panthers mounted another rally in the last two minutes to cut it to 14-11, but they could get no closer.

For the game, the Colonels outshot the Panthers 40-21, including 31-16 in shots on goal. Centre also held a 19-7 advantage over BSC in draw conntrol.

The Colonels will travel to Georgia next week for a pair of games, taking on Piedmont on Friday, then following it up with a Saturday game at Berry.
