Centre defeats BSC 19-10 in SAA women's lacrosse quarterfinal

The Centre women's lacrosse team hosted the Birmingham Southern Panthers in first round action at the 2015 SAA Tournament. In one of their best offensive performances of the season, the Colonels won by a score of 19-10.

The game was evenly played for the first 20 minutes. Andrea Wambaugh (Louisville, Ky.) scored two of her career high five goals in the early going, with Jacqueline Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) and Colleen Jackson (Gaithersburg, Md.) each added goals as the game was tied at 4-4 with 11 minutes left in the half.

The Colonels closed the opening half on a furious rally, outscoring the Panthers 8-1 in the final seven minutes of the first half. Jacqueline Anderson scored four goals during this run, with Ellen Resinger (Louisville, Ky.), Haden Gibbons (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.) adding one goal. Andrea Wambaugh closed out the half with a buzzer beating goal as the Colonels entered the locker room at halftime leading 12-5.

In the second half, Centre maintained the momentum that they had built to end the first half. The Colonels scored three goals in the opening five minutes of the half to take a 15-5 lead. Charlotte Sackett (Alexandria, Va.), Emily Madden and Andrea Wambaugh scored the goals to open the half and effectively put the game away. Anderson and Wambaugh scored their respective sixth and fifth goals of the game in the second half and Ellen Resinger scored a pair of goals to cap off the scoring for the Colonels.

For the game, Centre outshot Birmingham Southern 41-20, including a 34-16 advantage in shots on goal. The Colonels were also a perfect 12 for 12 on clears and held a 20-9 advantage on draw controls, with reigning SAA Defensive Player of the Week Ellen Resinger picking up six draw controls for Centre. The Colonels also forced the Panthers into 22 turnovers.

The next two rounds at the SAA Tournament will be played at top seed Sewanee. The Colonels will play the winner of the Rhodes vs. Hendrix game on Friday with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship game.
