Colonels steamroll Warriors 8-1 behind Garuba's hat trick

DANVILLE Ky. - Centre men's soccer overwhelmed Hendrix, 8-1, in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play on Sunday afternoon at Amend Field.

The Colonels improve to 7-4-2 overall and 3-0-2 in conference play with the win, while the Warriors fall to 3-12 overall and 0-5 in the SAA. It marked the sixth year in a row the Colonels have defeated the Warriors in their regular season meeting.

Centre dominated from the opening whistle, registering 17 shots and 14 on goal in the opening frame.

Shortly after the teams took the pitch in the first half senior John Herd (Colorado Springs, Colo.) netted his first goal of the season off of junior Jacob Haddad's (Brentwood, Tenn.) assist.

Just seven minutes later, junior Alexander Garuba (Atlanta, Ga.) tallied his fourth goal of the season to push the Colonel's lead to 2-0. Senior Noah Wesley-Chevalier (Cincinnati) assisted on the play.

In the 12th minute, with the rout officially on, Garuba added his second goal of the contest getting the assist from senior Harrison Dunn (Lexington, Ky.).

Haddad found the back of the net in the 16th minute, off of a Jesse DiLuzio (North Woodmere, N.Y.) helper, making the score 4-0 Colonels.

Centre poured on four more goals in the second half to complete the blowout victory.  

In the 66th minute, Garuba scored his third goal of the contest, marking Centre's first hat trick of the season.

Jack Butler found the back of the net for the Warriors' only thirty seconds later, cutting the Colonels lead to 5-1, but on the following Centre possession Royce Pope (Tampa, Fla.) beat the Warriors keeper, registering his fifth goal of the season.

Pope struck again only seconds later, extending Centre's lead to 7-1.

Senior Brad Nordin (Paintsville, Ky.) scored in the 85th minute off of a Ben Stinebruner (Louisville, Ky.) assist.

Centre finished the day with a massive 36 shots and 25 on goal, while Hendrix only managed seven throughout the entire match.

The Colonels hit to the road this Wednesday to face Birmingham Southern at 4:30 p.m. ET in a key SAA matchup.
