DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre soccer earned a much-needed victory against Birmingham-Southern Sunday, celebrating Senior Day with an important 2-0 conference decision at Andrew P. Amend Field.
Entering the day fifth in the Southern Athletic Association standings, the Colonels (10-4-1, 3-2-1 SAA) sit in fourth after defeating the visiting Panthers (9-4-2, 3-2-1). The top four teams earn the right to host a quarterfinal match in the upcoming conference tournament.
Prior to the match, Centre celebrated the careers of
Logan Dehner,
Alexander Garuba,
Jacob Haddad,
Bailey Spade,
Ben Stinebruner and
Xavier Tomlin. The group has compiled a 43-25-5 overall record over the past four seasons.
HIGHLIGHTS
- It was sophomore
Royce Pope that nearly opened the scoring, but he was ruled offsides on his rebounded goal in the 31st minute.
- The Colonels finally broke through on Garuba's goal in the 41st minute. The senior forward shook a BSC defender and had plenty of space to work with, slotting a low shot past the diving keeper.
- Spade preserved the 1-0 halftime lead just minutes later on a reaching save.
- Garuba made it 2-0 in the 63th minute with a dazzling goal, breaking down a defender before finding the back of the net.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Spade set the program single-season record with his 11th shutout of the season. He had two saves in Sunday's clean sheet.
- Centre out-shot Birmingham-Southern 20-3, including a 13-1 margin in the second half.
- The Colonels had 11 corners to the Panthers' eight.
