Colonels clinch SAA title on Senior Day

DANVILLE, Ky. – The ninth-ranked Centre women's soccer team had plenty to celebrate Sunday, defeating visiting Birmingham-Southern 3-0 under rainy conditions at Andrew P. Amend Field.

With the win, the Colonels (15-0, 6-0 SAA) claim the Southern Athletic Association regular season championship for the fourth consecutive year.

They also match 2012's squad with the best start to a season in program history, winning each of the first 15 matches.

At halftime of the victory, Centre celebrated the careers of seniors Kathryn Ahearne, Maddy Coleman, Keeghan Francis, Hannah Sirkin and Sarah Waldo. The group has compiled a stellar 70-7-6 record to graduate as the winningest class in Centre women's soccer history.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Francis marked her Senior Day with the game's first goal, scoring in the ninth minute on a headed-assist from Cameron Zak.
- Later in the half, Coleman got in on the festivities with a goal of her own. The score from distance was her first of the season, and gave Centre a 2-0 halftime lead.
- Abby Hegarty widened the lead to 3-0 on an impressive redirect off of Sarah Sirkin's pass in the 74th minute, somehow squeezing the ball past the Panther's keeper for her second goal of the year.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Continuing their trend of dominating possession, the Colonels out-shot the Panthers 33-0, putting 12 shots on target. Centre has allowed five shots in six SAA matches this season.
- Sarah Stodghill (14-0) and the Colonel defense logged the ninth consecutive shutout of the season.
- Centre has now gone unbeaten in 42 straight matches against conference competition (including regular season and tournament).
