Colonels crush Pioneers in regular season finale

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Centre field hockey closed the regular season in style Thursday, defeating in-state rival Transylvania by a 7-0 margin at Pat Deacon Stadium.

Winners of five straight, the Colonels improve to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the Southern Athletic Association. The victory marks Centre's first undefeated conference campaign since 2013.

Transy, which fell to Centre 8-0 back on Sept. 14 in Danville, drops to 1-13 overall (0-5 SAA) in the two teams' official conference meeting.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre overwhelmed Transy early, taking 10 shots in the first 10 minutes with Sarah Biggs' goal barely three minutes in marking the opening score.
- Savannah Elpers settled a pass from Emily Schank in the 17th minute and found the back of the cage, making it 2-0.
- Katie Jenkins netted the first of her two goals in the 29th minute, quickly followed by another Biggs tally.
- Jenkins would score with 10 seconds on the first-half clock to give Centre a 5-0 advantage at the break.
- Schank got in on the scoring in the 52nd minute, with Elpers returning the favor on the assist, and Caroline Brotzge capped the evening with the Colonels' seventh goal.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre dominated possession all night, recording 50 shots to Transy's zero – easily the most lopsided margin of the season. The Colonels put 31 shots on target.
- Biggs (18 goals) and Elpers (17) remain the top goal scorers this season for the Colonels after Thursday's match.
- Jenkins now has a pair of two-goal efforts this year, with the other coming in Centre's first meeting with Transy.
- Head Coach Jenelle Anthony is now 18-0 all-time against Transy since taking over the Centre program in 2011.
- Kristen Mulcahy earned her sixth shutout of the season.

Centre enters the postseason next weekend, traveling to Conway, Ark., for the SAA Championship Tournament. The top-seeded Colonels are looking to defend their 2017 SAA crown.
