CONWAY, Ark. – The No. 11 Centre women's soccer squad defeated Hendrix on the road Sunday, 2-0, in a meeting between the top two programs in the Southern Athletic Association.
With the win, the Colonels move to 13-0 overall and 4-0 in the SAA as the only team without a conference loss. They also move their remarkable unbeaten streak against SAA opponents to 40 matches. Hendrix slides to 9-4 (3-1 SAA).
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre broke through what had been a stingy defense late in the first half on a goal from rookie
Elizabeth Nelson. She found space at the top of the box and put away her sixth goal of the season, making it 1-0 at the break.
- The Colonels capitalized on a penalty kick awarded early in the second half, as
Alana Hughes doubled the lead. It marked her 11th goal of the season, already matching her output from the entire 2017 campaign.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- As has been their custom this season, the Colonels dominated possession and kept their opponents busy defending 23 total shots, 10 of which were on target. Hendrix managed one shot for the full 90 minutes.
- Centre also earned 13 corner kicks to the Warriors' none.
- The Colonels bottled up Hendrix's Hagan Griffith, who entered the match as the SAA's leading point scorer, allowing her just one shot that was saved by
Sarah Stodghill. Hughes passed Griffith and leads the conference in both goals (11) and points (26).
- A stout back line defense has helped Stodghill compile a league-best 0.27 goals-against average, including seven consecutive clean sheets.
