Colonels close Classic with 70-52 victory over Covenant

DANVILLE, Ky. – For the second night in a row the Centre women's basketball squad thrived in the final two quarters, defeating Covenant 70-52 in the finale of the Lee's Famous Recipe/Hampton Inn Classic in Alumni Gymnasium.
 
Centre (2-0) outscored the visiting Scots (0-2) 41-27 in the second half, shooting a blistering 15-for-25 (60%) from the floor.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- Although they trailed by seven points midway through the opening quarter, the Colonels managed to pull within a possession heading to the second period.
- Centre out-scored Covenant 17-10 in the second quarter, with Abigail Stewart netting nine points and rookie Presley Chirico draining a 3-pointer at the buzzer, making it 29-25 at the break. 
- The Colonels created more separation in the third, as Madison Rice hit both of her 3-point attempts to help spark a 25-13 advantage across the 10 minutes. Centre also out-rebounded Covenant 14-6 in the quarter.
- Centre led by at least 14 points the rest of the way, peaking at 21 points following a Cheyenne Bunner basket that made it 63-42. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Stewart led all players with 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting, hitting all five free throws. She also paced the team with eight rebounds and added two blocks.
- Kat Wilson followed with 12 points, while Chirico finished with seven points, two assists and two blocks in her first collegiate game. Abigail Wehby led the team with three assists.
- The Colonels hit nearly 52% (27-52) from the field, and had a sizeable 36-22 edge in points in the paint.

- Centre is off until Tuesday, Nov. 20, traveling to face in-state foe Spalding in Louisville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
