Lynx stun Colonels in SAA title shootout

CONWAY, Ark. – Centre field hockey suffered a heartbreaking defeat in a shootout against Rhodes Sunday, finishing as runners-up in the Southern Athletic Association Championship at Hendrix College.

The top-seeded Colonels (12-4) hit one of their first four shootout attempts, while the two-seed Lynx (12-3) hit three of four to clinch the title.

Centre and Rhodes have met in every SAA Tournament Championship since the league formed in 2012, but the Lynx have now claimed five of the seven meetings. The Colonels defeated Rhodes in the regular season earlier this fall, 3-1.

Caroline Brotzge, Savannah Elpers and Sarah Biggs were each named to the All-Tournament Team following the game.

REGULATION HIGHLIGHTS
- Emily Schank wasted little time opening the scoring for Centre, netting a goal in the 7th minute off an assist from Brotzge.
- Kristen Mulcahy needed one save to help the Colonels take a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
- Rhodes leveled the score on Meghan Harmon's 51st minute goal, and the two sides would finish regulation still knotted at 1-1.
- The 7-on-7 extra periods featured a handful of clutch saves from both Mulcahy and Rhodes keeper Nina Migneco.
- Centre appeared to have scored the golden goal in the second overtime, but as the team celebrated the goal was waved off due to a violation.

SHOOTOUT HIGHLIGHTS
- Biggs found the back of the net on Centre's first try, but the subsequent three shootout attempts missed for the Colonels.
- Leading 2-1 on their fourth attempt, the Lynx clinched the win on Jillian Christensen's conversion.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre outshot Rhodes by a wide 19-9 margin (14-5 SOG), but Migneco totaled 12 saves en rout to a Tournament MVP nod for the Lynx.
- The Colonels doubled the Lynx in corners, 16-8.
UP NEXT
