Colonels claim Bob Allen Classic behind 3-0 win over Aurora

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's soccer claimed the 29th Annual Bob Allen Classic title with a 3-0 victory against Aurora Saturday at Amend Field.

After a lightning delay pushed back the evening's schedule, the Colonels (4-0) earned three more points to finish atop the Classic table with two wins and six points for the weekend. Aurora (1-3) heads home with a pair of losses.

Alma placed second at the Classic, getting a head-to-head victory over Spalding in Saturday's opener. See below for the list of the Bob Allen Classic XI.

Aside from the team accomplishment, senior Bailey Spade tied the program's career shutout record with his 23rd clean sheet, tied with Chris Creger '08.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Both sides were limited offensively throughout much of the opening half, leading to few shots on goal.
- Spade had perhaps the play of the half in the 35th minute, laying out to stop a well-struck shot from Collin Foreman. The senior keeper had five saves at the half.
- The scoreless draw lasted until the 58th minute, when Nick Mazzarella swung in a ball for Will Newton, who converted his third goal of the season on a header.
- Alexander Garuba scored his second of the season in the 77th minute, as his headed effort glanced off of Aurora's keeper and still found its way to the back of the net. James Warinner provided the assist.
- Garuba found himself in the right spot again with just 40 seconds left, finishing off another Mazzarella cross to make the final tally 3-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre put eight of its 18 shots on goal, while Aurora had six of its 14 attempts on target.
- The two sides were nearly even on corner attempts, with the Spartans holding a slim 6-5 edge.
- Spade's 23rd shutout is his fourth of the season. The Colonels have outscored their first four opponents by a combined 13-0 margin.
- Garuba's brace is the third for Centre this season, as Dylan Barth and Will Newton completed the feat in Centre's season opener.
