Colonels defeat Pioneers on Play 4 the Cure night

DANVILLE, Ky. – The 16th-ranked Centre field hockey squad defeated in-state rival Transylvania by a 2-0 score on a chilly Wednesday evening at South Turf Field, competing in their ninth annual Play 4 the Cure game.

On the field, the Colonels improved to 12-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Athletic Association while dropping the Pioneers to 3-8 (1-1 SAA). Centre defeated Transy by a 10-0 margin earlier this season in a non-conference contest on the road.

Off the field, the field hockey program raised money for the National Foundation for Cancer Research through ticket and apparel sales, as well as donations.

HIGHLIGHTS

- Despite dominating possession and coming up with a handful of scoring chances, a short-handed Centre attack was unable to find the back of the cage as temperatures continued to plummet in the opening half.

- Centre would total 18 shots and nine penalty corners across the first two periods, limiting the visiting Pioneers to neither a shot nor a set piece opportunity.

- The Colonels' unrelenting pressure finally resulted in a goal in the third quarter, as Ellie Dunham scored in the 39th minute to make it 1-0.

- Sarah Biggs, who missed much of the first half, made her presence felt with a goal just five minutes later to double the lead.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Centre turned in its biggest shot advantage (34 to 0) of the season, putting 13 of those attempts on goal.

- Biggs and Caroline Brotzge each finished with seven shots for the Colonels, while Dunham totaled five.

- Kristen Mulcahy improved to 10-0 in-goal for Centre.
