BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 7/11 Centre women's soccer team went on the road and defeated Birmingham-Southern by a 3-0 score Friday at Goldfarb Field.
Although they entered the contest as the top two teams in the Athletic Association standings, the Colonels (16-0, 5-0 SAA) proved too much for the host Panthers (8-4-2, 3-1-1). Centre's victory also snaps a nine-match unbeaten streak from BSC.
Perhaps most notably, the Colonels have gone unbeaten in the SAA for nearly five years to the day. The last Centre loss against an SAA opponent – regular season or tournament – was back on Oct. 19, 2014.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre peppered BSC's Blakley Jones early, getting off eight shots across the first 10 minutes of the game. That led to a quick score from
Alana Hughes – her 12th of the season – as
Kristin Dean provided the assist.
- In the 40th minute,
Elizabeth Nelson would make it 2-0 with her sixth goal of the year thanks to
Taylor Gebhart's helper, and the Colonels carried that advantage into the halftime break.
- With full control of the match, the Colonels would tack on one more goal in the second half. Dean again assisted Hughes for a score in the 65th minute.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hughes has three two-goal matches this season after Friday's effort. Dean has provided three assists across the last two contests.
- Centre put 18 of its 33 shots on target, while limiting BSC to seven total attempts (3 SOG).
-
Jonelle Barron played all 90 minutes in goal, helping the Colonels record their 11th shutout of the season.
