DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre football fell victim to a potent Birmingham-Southern attack Saturday afternoon, falling by a 38-21 score inside Farris Stadium.
The Colonels dip to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the visiting Panthers, who ran for 431 yards as a team, improve to 5-2 (4-1 SAA).
HIGHLIGHTS
- Birmingham-Southern's vaunted rushing game was evident right away, as one of the nation's leading rushers, Robert Shufford, ripped off a 66-yard run on the first possession. Despite getting to the 2-yard line, BSC was held to a field goal by Centre's defense.
- The Colonels would take a 7-3 lead following their opening drive, as
John Walton connected with
Jordan Gunter for a 39-yard touchdown pass on a 3rd and 9.
- The Panthers responded with an 11-play, 75-yard drive, capped by Shufford's nine-yard touchdown scamper to regain a lead they ultimately would not relinquish.
- They led 17-7 after one quarter, as Shufford scored on another 66-yard run.
- After trading punts, Centre pieced together a resilient 15-play, 93-yard touchdown drive just before the half ended to cut into the deficit. The Colonels converted three third downs and a fourth down on the possession, which ended in
Clark Payne's TD pass to
Jake Woosley.
- Birmingham-Southern scored on its first two drives in the third quarter, with each eating up roughly five minutes of game time.
- Centre was forced to punt twice in the second half, and turned the ball over on downs as many times.
- A late Tanner Tally rushing touchdown helped trim the final score. It marked the sophomore's first career score.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- BSC finished with 24 first downs, getting 19 on the ground. All told, the Panthers recorded 569 total yards to Centre's 367, averaging 8.4 per play.
- The visitors also went a perfect 5 of 5 in red zone opportunities. The Colonels converted on both of their red zone tries.
- Walton completed all eight of his passes for 113 yards, and Payne went 13-for-28 for 149, as each tossed a TD.

Dameon Jones Jr. led the ground attack with 73 yards on 14 carries.
- Gunter hauled in eight passes for 123 yards, while Woosley caught five for 83.

Andre Evans led all individuals with 11 tackles, while
Jaylen Jones finished with nine. Both had seven solo tackles for the Colonels.
