DANVILLE, Ky.- The downpour didn't rain on the Centre men's soccer Senior Day parade Saturday afternoon, as the Colonels defeated Sewanee 3-1 at Andrew P. Amend Field.
In the final Southern Athletic Association matchup of the regular season, Centre (13-3-1, 6-1 SAA) continued its winning streak with a come-from-behind victory over Sewanee (11-4-1, 5-2) Saturday afternoon. The win secured the two-seed in the upcoming SAA Tournament.
Preceding the match, seniors Tate Johnson, Nick Mozzarella, Patrick Ferrell, Carson Hart, James Warinner, Jack Gaynor, Kaeman Filiatrault, and Jackson Meyer were recognized for their careers in a Senior Day ceremony.
HIGHLIGHTS
- With much of the first half being deadlocked, the tiebreaker came in the 32nd minute when Sewanee's Andile Tshuma connected to the back of the net with a header off an assist from Thompson Schollaert.
- Centre put the pressure on Sewanee's defense out of the gate in the second half, resulting in Alexander Garuba evening the score, 1-1, just two minutes into the period.
- In the 67th minute, junior Dylan Barth sent a shot through two Sewanee defenders and past the keeper to gain a 2-1 lead in what would become the game-winner.
- Garuba sealed the deal after evading a Sewanee defender and shooting a rocket right inside of the 18-yard box, marking his 14th goal of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre was a completely different team stat-wise in the second half, outshooting the Tigers 9:1 after being outshot in the first.
-The Colonels picked up six corners in the second half as opposed to zero in the first.
-Tate Johnson recorded three saves out of the four shots on goal.
-The Colonels marked their seventh consecutive win while securing the number two seed in the upcoming SAA Tournament.
