Colonels suffer first defeat in NCAA opening round match against Lynchburg

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre field closed the book on its historic 2019 season Wednesday afternoon, falling by a narrow 2-1 score against Lynchburg in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament under chilly conditions at South Turf Field.

The No. 12 Colonels, who were hosting their second national tournament game in program history, finish their season 18-1 overall, setting a record for wins in a campaign.

No. 16 Lynchburg improves to 19-3 and advances to the second round to face Rowan in Salisbury, Md.

HIGHLIGHTS
- One of the nation's highest-scoring teams, the Colonels hit the board first with an early goal by junior Sarah Biggs. She rebounded a saved shot to give Centre a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the game.
- It was 10 minutes before the Hornets were able to apply any offensive pressure, but a penalty corner play set up Emily Dudley to score the game-tying goal.
- Despite a pair of early tallies, the rest of the game was a battle for possession with limited scoring chances for either side.
- Perhaps the defensive play of the game came five minutes into the third quarter, when Maran Lee ripped a shot that required a diving save from Lynchburg's Laurel Nicks.
- The Hornets were awarded a penalty stroke in the 47th minute, and Jackie Lerro converted to make it 2-1.
- Centre had five shots in the final quarter, but wasn't able to level the score.
