Bates eclipses 1,000 points as Colonels roll past Golden Eagles

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's basketball earned its fourth road victory of the young season Saturday afternoon, defeating intrastate foe Spalding by a 78-63 margin inside Columbia Gymnasium.

Jacob Bates reached the 1,000-point milestone in the first half of the win, becoming the 33rd member of the club one game after classmate Perry Ayers became the 32nd member. Bates ended up with a game-high 25 points, 19 of which came in the second half, and 13 rebounds.

Rookie Carter Baughman added a collegiate-high 16 points as Centre improved to 6-1 overall, sending the host Golden Eagles to 0-5.

HIGHLIGHTS
- An early 3-pointer from Art Walker was a sign of good things to come from the Colonels, who would drain eight triples in the opening 20 minutes.
- Dawson Crump's three near the 14-minute mark was Centre's fourth in as many field goals, and gave the Colonels a 12-8 advantage.
- Spalding stayed right on Centre's heels throughout the period, though, and tied the game at 28-28 with five minutes left on Brian Tribble's long range basket.
- The Colonels would go on a 12-4 run prior to the break – including Bates' milestone bucket – and led 40-32 at the half.
- Centre led wire to wire in the second period, thanks in part to another 12-4 stretch to start the half. Baughman hit a pair of 3-pointers during the run.
- Bates dominated in the second half, going 9 of 12 for 19 points, five rebounds and two steals to help secure the win.
- Centre's largest lead came with five minutes remaining and the visitors on top, 72-54.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Bates is now over 1,000 points and 500 rebounds for his career, and pushed his season averages to 24.3 points and 9.4 boards per game with his fourth double-double of the year.
- Baughman knocked down four 3-pointers, adding three assists. Ayers led the team with five helpers.
- The Colonels shot a blistering 64% (16-25) in the second half, missing only four shots inside the perimeter. They would finish with a season-high 12 3-pointers.
- Centre held advantages in points off turnovers (15 to 8), in the paint (32 to 20) and on fast break (8 to 2).
- The Colonels out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 34-24, and their 10 offensive rebounds resulted in 13 second chance points.
