Colonels reach eighth straight SAA title match with 6-0 rout over Berry

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's soccer continued its remarkable 2019 campaign Friday evening, rolling over Berry by a 6-0 score in the Southern Athletic Association semifinals at Andrew P. Amend Field.

The No. 6/10 Colonels are a perfect 20-0 overall, having won 40 of their last 41 matches overall while advancing to their eighth straight SAA Tournament title match. Centre is also seeking its eighth title, as its won all 22 SAA Tournament matches its played in since the league was formed in 2012.

Berry's season ends with an 8-7-3 overall record.

In the win, senior Alana Hughes tied the program's single-season points record, matching Destinie Graves' output in 2015 (63).

HIGHLIGHTS
- After a 1-0 regular season victory over the Vikings, the Colonels seemed determined to score early and often against an upset-minded Berry side.
- Hughes flicked home a goal off a cross from Brooke Smithson to open the scoring in the 17th minute, good for her 22nd goal of the season.
- Averi Faulk, an All-American holding midfielder for the Colonels, scored her second career goal in the 24th minute, converting from outside the 18-yard box.
- Mills Mullen hit the back of the net just six minutes later to make it 3-0 at the half.
- It didn't take long for Centre to score in the second period, as Hughes fed Sarah Sirkin in the 50th minute. Hughes' pass marked her 19th assist of the season, while Sirkin's goal was her 10th.
- In the 60th minute, Meghan Paynter rebounded a saved shot from Taylor Gebhart, and just three minutes later Gebhart herself capped the scoring on a header off of Jessie Turner's cross.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre thoroughly out-shot Berry, 28-1, as Hughes and Sirkin totaled four each.
- Jonelle Barron and Sarah Stodghill each saw time in goal for the Colonels.
- Hughes, who was sixth in Division III in points entering the match, has 22 goals and 19 assists, and needs just one point to surpass Graves' 2015 outpouring (27 goals, 9 assists).
