Colonels cruise into SAA title game with 5-0 win over Sewanee

LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the third time in the past 21 days, Centre field hockey made quick work of Sewanee, dropping the Tigers by a 5-0 score Saturday in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament semifinals, hosted by Transylvania.

The Colonels improved to 17-0 overall, matching the program record for victories in a season with the 2017 squad.

Along the way, Caroline Brotzge set the SAA single-season assist record, pushing her 2019 total to 18.

Sewanee's season ends with a 6-11 overall record.

HIGHLIGHTS

- The Colonels wasted no time in their first postseason game of the year as Savannah Elpers put in the first goal of the contest just four minutes in off a Brotzge assist.
- Brotzge continued to share the wealth for the Colonels in the first period, dishing an assist to Meredith Wickenheiser as the sophomore netted a goal to put Centre up 2-0.
- Five minutes into the second period, the Colonels put the game away for good with two goals in 34 seconds, the first coming from a solo effort by Brotzge and the second from Megan Coomes after an assist from Wickenheiser.
- Shots were few and far between in the second half, but Centre tacked on one more goal in the third period when two-time SAA Defensive Player of the Week Shelby Young found Coomes for Centre's fifth goal of the game.

- Elpers' game winner was goal no. 20 on the year for the senior co-captain and her fourth clincher of the season.
