Tigers catch fire from long range to top Colonels in regular season finale

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Centre women's basketball team played its regular season finale at Sewanee, where the Colonels' normally stingy defense had a difficult time stopping the Tigers' shooting, falling by a score of 73-54.

HIGHLIGHTS

- Much like their last game against Berry, the Colonels shot the ball well to start the contest as Abigail Wehby, Kat Wilson and Lakken Miller combined to make four three-pointers in the opening period. The Tigers answered with three triples of their own and led Centre 19-18 after one period.
- Wilson's second three of the day gave Centre its biggest lead at 23-19, but once the Tigers took a 27-25 lead on an Abby Young long ball, Sewanee would never relinquish the lead as they went up 38-32 going into the break at halftime.
- In the third period, Wilson scored three quick points to cut the Tigers' lead in half, but over the next five minutes, Sewanee outscored Centre 10-0 and went up by double digits. A basket by Abigail Stewart and free throws by Presley Chirico made it 48-43, but Sewanee scored the final six points of the quarter and went into the final period up 54-43 as Centre could get no closer the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- The Centre defense, which entered the contest leading the Southern Athletic Association in both points per game and field goal percentage, struggled to contain the Sewanee attack all game long. The Tigers shot 51 percent for the game, but were particularly lethal from three-point range, where they went 11-for-18 for 61.1 percent.
- The Tigers also took advantage of Centre miscues, outscoring the Colonels 28-17 in points off turnovers. Sewanee also held a 42-24 advantage over Centre in bench points.
- Wehby led the way for the Colonels with 11 points as the only Centre player to hit double figures for the game. Ellen Hicks paced the Colonels with a career high seven rebounds.

NEXT UP

The next game for the Centre women's basketball team will be in Jackson, Miss. for the quarterfinal round of the SAA Tournament, as sixth-seeded Centre will face third-seeded Berry. The Vikings swept the Colonels during the regular season, but the games were decided by a combined ten points.
