DANVILLE, Ky. – Patrick Hope drove in
Drew Schacht with a deep base hit in the bottom of the 11th inning Sunday evening, giving the Colonels a 2-1 win against Berea at Gary Wright Field.
Centre starts the year 2-1 overall, taking the series against the Mountaineers with a win in Sunday's rubber match.
HIGHLIGHTS
Centre senior
Nick Hoffman tossed four scoreless innings in his first start of the season, stranding five Berea batters in the first two frames.
The Mountaineers manufactured an unearned run in the top of the fifth against Hoffman, taking a 1-0 lead.
The Colonel bats struggled early against Berea starter TC Eads, as Centre managed just two hits in the first five innings.
Centre finally tied the game in the sixth, when
Parker Selin drove home
Chris Esselman on a two-out RBI single.
Berea got runners on second and third in the top of the eighth, but Esselman, who relieved Hoffman, got out of the jam to preserve the tie.
The following frame Berea again had two runners on, but a diving catch and put-out from Selin ended the threat.
Both sides had opportunities to score in extra innings, but it wasn't until the bottom of the 11 that either crossed the plate.
With the bases full and only one out, Hope sent a ball to deep right center near the warning track, bringing in Schacht, who had singled earlier in the frame.
Schacht also earned the win on the mound, tossing 2.2 innings while allowing just two hits and no runs.
