DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre baseball finally got to get on the field Sunday, making the most of the somewhat clear weather with a pair of victories against Dominican (11-1) and Olivet (11-4) at Gary Wright Field.
The Colonels combined for 18 hits on the day, improving to 4-1 overall.
HIGHLIGHTS: CENTRE 11, DOMINICAN 1 (8 inn.)
After surrendering an unearned run in the top of the first, Centre's bats began with a pop in the bottom of the frame. The Colonels plated six runs while batting around the lineup.
Centre added another tally in the second, as
Chris Esselman walked with the bases loaded to bring home
Mason Falbo.
Falbo drove in a run of his own in the bottom of the fifth, bringing
Austin Sharkey with a single to left.
Starter
Sam Shelley went on to work six innings, scattering five hits while striking out six and allowing no earned runs.
Alex Rozner and
Cameron Duggins each had RBIs in the eighth inning, and when
Cole Hilt came home later in the frame the game ended in a run rule.
Will Kirk and
Drew Schacht each had two hits in the win, while Falbo and Sharkey scored two runs apiece.
Clay Rouse threw two scoreless innings in relief, striking out three batters.
HIGHLIGHTS: CENTRE, DOMINICAN
Centre wasted little time putting up crooked numbers in the nightcap, scoring in each of the first four innings.
Kirk and
Jordan Gunter scored the game's first two runs on wild pitches, and Sharkey made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly that brought in Esselman.
The Colonels added three more in the third, highlighted by
Parker Selin's two-RBI infield single.
In the fourth,
Patrick Hope drove in Schacht with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Starting pitcher
Nick Hoffman faced the minimum through three innings, and was spotless until the fifth when Olivet scored four runs on four hits.
The Colonels answered with runs in the sixth and seventh innings, making it 9-4 as Schacht and Esselman crossed the plate.
Centre tacked on two more runs in the eighth when Duggins reached on an error that allowed Gunter and
Seth Hagan to score.

Jake Holloway each logged time on the mound in relief.
