Late flurry buries Colonels in SAA Championship

DANVILLE, Ky. – Sewanee sank four consecutive 3-pointers in the final minutes of Sunday's Southern Athletic Association Championship game, rallying to defeat Centre by a 62-59 score inside Alumni Gymnasium.

The Colonels (23-5) held a late 57-50 lead before the Tigers (22-6) began their title-clinching finish, claiming the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Centre will await the NCAA Selection Show Monday at 12:30 p.m. ET to see if it receives an at-large bid for its first appearance in the "Big Dance" since 2013-14.

HIGHLIGHTS
- The game's first five minutes could not have gone better for the Colonels, who limited the Tigers to an 0-for-6 start from the field while taking an 8-0 lead.

- Sewanee took a 30-24 lead into the half, finishing the period on an 8-0 run. The Colonels went 2 of 15 from 3-point range in the opening half.
- The Tigers took the game's first 10-point lead at 41-31 four minutes into the second half, but Art Walker answered with consecutive 3-pointers.
- A basket by Ayers tied the game at 44-44, and his midrange jumper on the next possession regained the lead for the Colonels.
- Centre went on an 8-0 stretch later in the period, taking a 57-50 lead with only 2:20 remaining.
- Sewanee's Luke Smith would hit a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions, and Hunter Buescher hit another after a Colonel turnover to tie the game at 59-59.
- Centre came up empty on its next trip down the court, and Michael Barry hit Sewanee's fourth straight 3-pointer with just 2.2 left to put the Tigers ahead for good.
