DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre baseball cruised past visiting Eureka on a blustery evening at Gary Wright Field Friday, winning 11-1 on a run-rule in seven innings.
The Colonels improve to 10-4 overall with the victory, getting a strong starting effort from
Sam Shelley (3-1) while stealing a season-high seven bases as a team. The Red Devils fall to 2-5 with the loss.
HIGHLIGHTS
Following two scoreless innings,
Chris Esselman sparked a two-out rally in the second, doubling to right field.
Cameron Duggins followed with an RBI single to give Centre a 5-0 lead.
Centre took advantage of a couple of Eureka miscues, as Duggins came around to score after
Austin Sharkey reached on a fielding error.
Parker Selin then scored when a double steal forced an errant throw from Eureka's catcher.
Drew Schacht capped the frame with an RBI double to right, scoring
Will Kirk to make it 5-0.
Shelley didn't allow a hit until the fourth, and kept the Red Devils off the board until an unearned run crossed in the fifth.
Jordan Gunter helped get the run back in the bottom of the inning, driving in
Patrick Hope to make it 6-1.
The Colonels would reach the 10-run margin in the seventh to end the game. Esselman and
Will Ahrens each brought a run in with consecutive bases-loaded walks.
Parker Selin ended the affair with a two-RBI single to right field, scoring Gunter and Esselman.
Shelley tossed six innings, allowing only four hits and no earned runs while fanning two batters.
Hogan Brownley threw one scoreless inning in relief, stranding two runners.
Centre was well-balanced offensively, as nine individuals scored a run and eight had at least one RBI. Eight different Colonels provided a hit in the win, as well, with Kirk and Schacht delivering two apiece.
