DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's lacrosse claimed a back-and-forth contest against visiting Berry Saturday afternoon at Farris Stadium, winning by a 15-14 score on
Jack Shannon's golden goal in overtime.
Centre improves to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Athletic Association, defeating Berry (3-6, 0-1) for the first time since the 2016 season.
Anthony DiMichele led the Colonel attack with five points (3 goals, 2 assists), and
Connor Jongewaard turned aside 17 shots in the cage.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Berry scored the game's first goal less than a minute into the contest, but the Colonels gained a 5-2 lead as five different players scored in the opening quarter.
- The Vikings were equally effective in the second quarter, turning the tide and outscoring Centre 6-2 across the period. They also took six of nine faceoffs and had 15 shots to Centre's five.
- Berry's last goal with just 21 seconds left gave the visitors an 8-7 advantage at the half.
- The Vikings took their biggest lead at 10-7 early in the third quarter, but Centre hit back with a four-goal flurry in a matter of minutes to reclaim the lead.
- Centre took advantage of multiple Berry penalties, getting man-up goals from
Chase Poplin and Shannon during the stretch. DiMichele also scored twice during the run.
- A late score from
Drew Greenblatt made it 12-11 heading to the fourth.
- The see-saw continued in the final period, where Berry again took the lead after consecutive goals from Andrew Elgin and Luke Koferl.
- Poplin and Morrison scored to swing the lead back to Centre, 14-13, but a late Vikings goal was enough to force overtime.
- Berry claimed the opening faceoff in overtime, but
Nolan Irey forced a turnover and claimed possession for the Colonels.
- Shannon would score the game-winner shortly after a Centre timeout, ending the wild affair.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre had eight different goal scorers, led by DiMichele's and Poplin's hat trick efforts. DiMichele, Shannon and
Padraic Dermody each recorded two assists.
- Berry won 19 of 32 faceoffs, and also held a slight edge in ground balls at 33-26.
- The Colonels were perfect in extra-man opportunities, going 3 of 3.
