Hulette’s OT winner sends Colonels to SAA title game

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Centre women's lacrosse added yet another dramatic game to its 2019 resume, defeating Sewanee by an 8-7 score in overtime to advance to the Southern Athletic Association Championship.

McKenna Hulette cut through the Tigers' defense to net the game-winner in the extra period at Puett Field, avenging last week's 18-9 loss to Sewanee while securing a spot in the conference title match for the third time in the past four years.

Centre improves to 14-4 overall while ending Sewanee's season at 12-7. Top-seeded Rhodes awaits the Colonels in next weekend's SAA Championship.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Although Sewanee scored first, Centre's defense clamped down in the first half to limit the Tigers to one goal in the first 25 minutes.
- Amelia Tomasulo made it 1-1 midway through the half, and goals from Bella Tacogue and Mary Katherine Hardy helped push the lead up to 4-1.
- Abby Whitford scored a man-up goal later in the period, leading to a 5-3 halftime advantage for the visitors.
- Centre held Sewanee to just seven shots in the first 30 minutes while forcing 22 turnovers.
- Hulette tallied a goal to start the second half, but a 4-0 stretch from the Tigers saw them grab a 7-6 lead and put the Colonels on their heels.
- Hulette leveled the game with a goal near the 10-minute mark, and the 7-7 score would hold through regulation.
- The Centre defense held Sewanee to two shots across the final 10 minutes, one of which was saved by Lola Duff.
- After the first three minutes of the overtime period, MK Hardy corralled the draw control that ultimately led to Hulette's game-winner.

COACH QUOTES
- Monica Scott: "Coming off the loss to Sewanee last week, we went into the tournament knowing how and what to improve moving forward. Lola and the defense really stepped up in shutting down the fast breaks, and on the offensive end we were able to rework our sets to showcase our strengths.

"Going into overtime, I was confident in our draw team and they played a huge role in getting our offense set up for the win. I am extremely proud of the first-years who have proven themselves as impact players so early in their collegiate career, supported by the fact that both OT wins this season came from a sudden-death goal from a first-year. I am extremely proud of this 2019 team and look forward to our second consecutive SAA Championship appearance."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre took 13 of 18 draw controls, including 8 of 9 in the second half and overtime periods. MK Hardy led the way individually with seven DCs.
- The Colonels also held a 29-19 advantage in total shots. Hulette scored three goals for Centre, marking her ninth hat trick of the season.
- Tomasulo came up with a personal-best six ground balls, while MK Hardy and Katy Haering recorded five apiece. Hardy also led the team with four caused turnovers.
